‘The Beginning’ EP Set to Release April 27th!

Hey Friends!

I am very excited to announce that my first every EP is set to release April 27th!
I know most of you have followed my journey in Nashville these past few months and now I will have something to share with all of you from it.

The Beginning EP

A few words about this project.
I first had the idea for “The Beginning” about 4 or 5 years ago when I was frontman for Divine Intervention. My best friend and I wrote the song (The Beginning) together during one of our practices (which were more like loud jam sessions) and soon it became the closing song at all of our shows. Once Divine Intervention ended, I began to write more acoustic guitar led songs so that I can perform them on my own without a band (since I didn’t have one anymore). As I continued to write, I noticed that the songs I wrote reflected the stage of my life that I was in, and that these stages can repeat over a course of a few years, each time learning something new from them.

As I noticed this pattern, the songs seemed to pave a road map journey of the last 5 years of my life and what I had learned. Thus, I decided to name my first album after the song that started it all, as well as the fact that I wanted my first album to be “The Beginning”! (pause for laughter). “The Beginning” also serves as a fitting title because I believe no matter what you go through, there is always the ability to begin again. As much as I would want “The Beginning” to be a full-length album, I am in no way financially able to produce such a large project or able to access the resources to make sure that it would be a top notch album.

I have decided to release “The Beginning” as a 5 song EP which is 100% self-produced!
While I have been in Nashville studying at the CMC, I was blessed with a recording studio and some amazingly talented friends who were willing to track these songs with me for FREE! So kudos to them! This record would not be a record if I did not have their help!

My Goal.

“The Beginning” means a lot to me for various reasons.

1) I wanted to document this time in my life. The time between the Divine Intervention days, up until this point in my life where I have decided that being a musician is going to be apart of who I am and not just what I want to do. The good, the bad, the dynamic and the static. I want this to be a record I can look back on and remember what God has taught me through this time.

2) I wanted to showcase my talents as not only a writer and musician, but also as a producer and engineer. There are no professionals on this record. No paid talent musician or otherwise. All of these tracks were written and mixed by myself with the help of some friends from the CMC program (most of which between the hours of midnight and the sunrise). And if this project totally flops, then I know what I need to get better at and what avenues to pursue instead.

3) I believe this project can be a blessing to others. While writing these songs, I have often been asked if my music would be considered “christian” or “secular”. To me, neither of those words exist or should be used when creating music or any form of art. I write music about the experiences I have had and the things I dream about. The things that I have learned and the things that inspire me to be a better person; and hopefully listeners (christian or otherwise) can be inspired by it as well.

I can not thank my family and friends who have helped me follow my dreams enough. This record would not be possible without those closest to me giving me guidance, support and love through this process.

And you, the reader, the audience, the brother or sister that I have gained along the way; thank you for your support and love that you have shown me. I have been impacted by so many great people over the last 5 years of college and this collection of songs I hope, will represent your influence in some way.

On April 27th, 2013 I will release my first ever album “The Beginning” EP available for digital download. It would be an honor if you purchased it, downloaded it to your iPods, iPhones, and any other listening devices and shared it with your friends and family!

In addition to the album’s release, I will be having a CD release show at Southeastern University on Saturday April 27th, (the same day) at 7:30pm, which I will be playing alongside fellow CMC artists DANIELLA DÁE & DAKOTA. You can find the event page here: CD Release Concert Reserve your tickets here: TICKETS

I am overwhelmed with your support! Thank you for taking this journey with me and I hope in some way, my music will bless you in some way.

“My life begins with you!”

“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you,
and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will
in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him,
being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power,
for all patience and longsuffering with joy;
giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be parktakers
of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

–  Colossians 1:9-12 NKJ

It was a good friend of mine who called me up and suggested I read the entire book of Colossians and look for God speak to me through it. As I began to read, I realized that there was more I needed to gain from this book then one sitting would allow. So I’ve decided to read Colossians a few times each week and write down in my personal journal some of the things that stand out, some of which will end up on here.

The first thing I gained from this passage is that: it is not weakness to ask for help.
The journey of faith is hard enough, it helps to have a few prayer warriors invested in your life who are continually lifting you up and keeping you in check. I’m not talking about the people who ask you how you are doing, say they’ll keep you in their prayers, and then hang up the phone. I’m talking about the people who spend the exact second that God puts you on their heart in word and in prayer interceding on your behalf, then call you up to share what God had to say and force them to pray with you over the phone. Not only to pray for direction and discernment for your life, but pray for “the knowledge of His will”, “spiritual understanding”, and the ability to “walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him;” the spiritual advocators of your life.

The second thing I noticed was the phrase “fully pleasing to Him.” What does that look like? How is there a way for me, a sinner, to be “fully pleasing” in the eyes of the Lord? This seems close to impossible; which is exactly Paul’s point. The only way we can be please the Lord is to practice “being fruitful in every good work and increase in the knowledge of God” let us be “strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power.” He is the creator of the impossible, the giver of love, power and grace in our lives. HE wants US to practice HIM. Why else would He hold us to an impossible standard if He didn’t want us to call upon Him to reach it?

The last thing I gathered from this passage has to do with the Right God has given us. God didn’t have to love His creation. He didn’t have to spend time with us and make us like Him. He didn’t have to give us the option to spend eternity with Him. He chose to. For this reason, we have to choose as well. With every choice there is a consequence, a reaction, an equal balance to each decision. Of course we are aware of the consequence of nonbelievers. That fire and brimstone message is a broken record. What is more important to me is to focus on what God has given us; the inheritance of the saints in the light; heaven, eternity, unconditional love. Grace abounding, Joy unspeakable, Resurrection from death. These are the consequences, the rights, the inheritance that God has given freely to those who choose Him.

He fills our patience and longsuffering with His Joy. We no longer need to wait for Him to come through. HE has given US our inheritance already. Now use it.

“…Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.”

– Colossians 4:17

I have officially launched my brand new website gregjburgess.com & have posted a FREE download of my new single “Burn Out” which will be accompanied by 5 other songs on my debut solo album “The Beginning EP” this May!

I hope you enjoy listening to “Burn Out” enough to want to share it with your friends and family! Make sure you tweet about it and post about it on facebook!
You can follow me on both here: Twitter  Facebook

There are definitely some great songs and great musicians appearing on “The Beginning EP” and I am very passionate and proud of it! I’ve been wanting to release an album for a few years now, and I’m really excited that it is finally about to happen. I have really tried to stretch myself and push these songs to the limit and I think they are going to turn out great. As for any independently released record, it is hard to get the quality you want without sacrificing your pocket, but we all have to start somewhere and I’m happy to begin the journey as a recording artist. God has blessed me tremendously the past few months and my excitement for this record shows it.

Feel free to subscribe to my news page and blog page and join me on the journey of the next season of my life!
